How to bake your own Julekake – the easy way!
If you can’t buy a traditional Scandinavian Julekake for the holidays, try making it at home.
Step 1 – Gather your ingredients
The Sweet Cardamom Bread Mix from Sturdiwheat is a great base for this bread. You can customize by adding your favorite candied fruits or nuts. The dough from one mix can be split and baked into two loaves.
Ingredients:
1 Bag Sturdiwheat Sweet Cardamom Bread Mix
1 Egg
1 Cup Candied Orange Peel (or other dried fruit and nuts)
1 1/4 Cup warm water
Glaze –
1 Cup powdered sugar – we recommend Lars Own Vanilla Powdered Sugar
2-3 Tbsp heavy cream or milk
1/2 tsp Cook’s Almond Extract
Optional: Pearl sugar for topping – this can go on before or after baking.

Step 2 – Read through the recipe

Baking tip: since pearl sugar has larger grains, it doesn’t melt when baking. For a simple non-glazed bread finish, you can also brush egg wash over the loaf and sprinkle it pearl sugar before putting it in the oven. The loaf will have a nice shiny crust and just a little sweetness.
Step 3 – Cool loaf and glaze as desired
After the bread has cooled, blend glaze ingredients and spread over bread, sprinkling pearl sugar over the glaze if desired. Note: you can vary the thickness of the glaze by adding more or less cream, making either a thin, clear glaze, or a heavier, white glaze.
